As there was no damage to the exterior of the box, I suspect the damage occurred at the factory. Nonetheless, I was able to bend the pole lip enough to be able to assemble the item. The assembly instructions are on a single sheet and put bluntly, they stink. They gave no clear indication of where to install the two part plastic bushings that I ultimately figured out are required to secure the top and bottom platforms to each of the four poles. As my mechanically disinclined brain tried to solve the puzzle, I tried the Honey Can Do Web site. It was not helpful. This model isn't shown and they have no provisions for assembly tips, a FAQ, or anything. So I called the company mid-day EST on a Tuesday. Ended up having to leave a message on their voicemail asking for a call back. No call yet, but it has "only" been an hour or so. After opening the box my jaw dropped. The shelves had a similar gauge to that of dry cleaning hangers! In other words, I could easily bend them with my fingers. Hardly "heavy duty" and a total insult to any consumer. To top it off the plastic locking slides that hold the shelves up didn't lock so the shelves easily slid down. I called Honey-Can-Do (what a misnomer unless you consider everything they make is as sturdy as dripping honey). They were in complete disbelief that their product was considered shabby.
